As a psychologist, I have had the privilege and good fortune to work across a number of treatment settings and populations in my career. I say this has been both a privilege and good fortune because it has allowed me to see first-hand the resilency and capacity for growth in the human spirit. It has further strengthened my growing belief that most difficulties that we come to encounter in our daily lives are the product of coping strategies gone awry, and not the result of personal deficiencies or breakdown.
We are purposeful creatures. Nothing that we do is arbitrary. When faced with the challenges of life, most people take them head-on with whatever skills or resources they believe to be advantageous at the time. Unfortunately, some of these skills or resources are not sufficient to manage the intensity or complexity of the problem experienced. Other times, it is previous life experiences, fears, or other competing motivations that get in the way of adequately responding to the task at hand.
In my role as a psychologist, I believe I am charged with the responsibility of helping to examine these potential pitfalls, and further, to share in identifying other coping strategies that better maximize both the resiliency and personal strengths of the child, adult, couple or family.
Regards.
