Find answers in a Marriage Checkup

In two appointments, one to provide information and one to receive feedback, you can pinpoint your key relationship strengths and potential work areas, and begin to establish a focused plan for improvement.

What does a marriage checkup include?

·        A series of paper-pencil questionnaires for each partner to fill out (this will take approximately 1.5-2 hours of your time)

·        A one-and-a-half hour interview to gather information about your relationship

·        A one-hour feedback session about your relationship

·        A written report for you to keep, summarizing your relationship strengths, potential areas of improvement, and suggestions for enhancing your relationship.

Is a marriage checkup right for me and my spouse?

A marriage checkup is for any couple who would like to know more about specific qualities and behaviors that create satisfying and stable marriages and what can be done to strengthen these qualities in their own relationship.

A marriage check-up is also for any couple who feels that there is something missing from their relationship, but are not sure what to change or how to change it.  Couples who would like to work together to improve a specific aspect of their relationship may also benefit from a marriage checkup.  Often such couples do not feel that they are candidates for couples counselling, yet feel that their options for addressing their issues are limited.

How will a marriage checkup benefit us?

There are several potential benefits of participating in a marriage checkup.  These include the opportunity to:

·        Understand how your marriage strengths and work areas compare to various “blueprints” for stable and happy relationships

·        Learn what you can do to create greater closeness, intimacy, support, friendship, love, fun, and happiness in your marriage

·        Find out how your styles of handling conflict impact the health of your marriage

·        Pinpoint harmful relationship dynamics early on while they are easy to alter before they become entrenched and more difficult to change

·        ‘Test out’ the process of working with a marital professional

·        Arrive at a balanced view of both your strengths and work areas and a plan for improvement

Is a marriage checkup therapy?

While a marriage checkup is not intensive therapy, there are therapeutic components to the process of a marriage checkup. Research has shown that couples who participate in a marriage checkup often make significant improvements to their relationship following the check-up.

A marriage checkup is educational, practical, and solution-focused.  Feedback about your relationship strengths and potential work areas will be offered to you at the second visit.   You will be free to use the information as you please.

Should you feel that you wish to pursue couples counselling following the checkup, you will be provided with several referral options in the city that suit your needs and budget. These options will be included as part of the recommendations in the report.

How much does a marriage checkup cost?

The fee for a marriage checkup is $350.    This includes the two interviews, feedback from the questionnaires, and the report that you will receive.  This fee is payable in two equal installments at the start of each interview.   This is a discounted, introductory fee for Dr. Cobb’s services, for a marriage checkup only, and represents a $435 value.
