PERSONAL THOUGHTS OF BRYAN CAMPBELL, REGISTERED PSYCHOLOGIST

I believe that our emotional wellbeing is determined by the quality of our thinking and the influence of our family. With or without our awareness, our family of origin establishes our worldview. In therapy as adults, we may bring deeply instilled beliefs to the forefront where they can be examined and developed in more productive ways.

Through this process, we are able to identify, acknowledge and move beyond unpleasant emotions rather than engage in avoidant, compulsive & destructive patterns of behaviors. Some people use excessive alcohol or food to reduce stress, and others feel empty and sad but do not know why. Whether you are struggling in a relationship or overwhelmed by anger, unhealthy thinking continues to fuel distress that was caused by behavioral patterns set earlier in life. While these patterns originated in childhood & adolescence, counselling is a collaborative process of constructing viable opportunities in the here-and-now; while I believe there is little value in dwelling on the past, I believe it is wise to carefully consider the influence of family and significant life events.

The result of working through difficult emotions by altering our beliefs leads us to contentment and the acceptance of life. We move away from detached states of numbness when we are no longer disconnected from our feelings and the world that surrounds us. Clients find the process both liberating and empowering.

I believe that increasing and maintaining self-awareness is a life-long and exciting process that strengthens our spirit and enriches our experiences.  Consciousness raising allows us to gain new perspectives that neutralize the effects of past traumas. As a result of the counselling process, clients start choosing to act in ways that develop their boundless potential.
