Over her eleven years of experience as a professional counsellor, Sophia Lang has developed a few areas of specialized expertise. She specializes in the treatment of marital therapy, using Emotion Focused Therapy for Couples. The goal of EFT is to deepen and strengthen the marital bond and build emotional safety by gently encouraging the expression of each person’s vulnerable emotions.
Sophia also has expertise in resolving sexuality issues. She has treated couples (heterosexual and same-sex) with the range of sexual dysfunctions that arise within a partnership (e.g., differing desire for sex, avoidance of sexual connection, premature ejaculation, erectile dysfunction, etc.). She has also helped many clients who have concerns about sexual orientation or sexual addictions.

A second of area of expertise for Sophia is depression and the use of Mindfulness and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy to prevent relapses into subsequent episodes of depression. Mindfulness is a way of being more deeply present to your body, your thoughts, and your emotions. It is learning to be and work in the present moment rather than in the past or future.
Mindfulness helps us get off of “autopilot” so that we can experience the richness of life as it unfolds. This can lead to deeper levels of relaxation, calm, inner balance and more effective coping in stressful situations. Worldwide, mindfulness is taught to medical patients who live with chronic pain and conditions that will not remit.

A third area of specialization is the treatment of PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) using EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). EMDR is an advanced technology for releasing traumatic memories, changing negative core beliefs and behaviour patterns, for treating anxiety, and for overcoming addictive and compulsive behaviour. Some examples include: accidents; invasive medical procedures; childhood or sexual assault, physical, or emotional abuse; living with an addicted or violent parent or partner. EMDR is very focused, efficient, and effective. Sophia Lang has seen dramatic results with many clients.

**New::Sophia Lang and colleague Sidney Craig Courtice have developed workshops and seminars that specifically address the needs of clergy. Ministry work offers cherished emotional and spiritual rewards, yet the demands and stressors on spiritual leaders are extraordinary. It is all too common for clergy (ordained and lay) to find themselves burnt-out, exhausted, lonely and isolated. For more information about Clergy Care workshops, or to discuss any othe ways that we can be of assistance in keeping you, the spiritual leader and your congregation healthy, please contact us. We welcome calls. Contact either Sophia Lang at 243-6285 or sophialang@shaw.ca or Sidney Courtice at 289-5003 or scourtice@shaw.ca
